Elmts buildup of some of the elements I did for an rnd test at the very beginning of the project … (h264 crushed the blacks and colors a bit as usual):
I’ve always been a huuuuge fan of Asian martial arts movies.
So of course I was more than stoked to get the call to work on a quick stint for Jet Li’s upcoming movie Feng Shen Bang or League of Gods as it will be called in the “Western” world.
No idea what they ended up doing with the grading of the trailer … Anyway, I got to do all the CG fires and smoke sims (and renders) as well as all the embers
Having used Terragen exclusively for these sorta things I wanted to see if I could replicate some scenarios in Houdini and sure enough it wasn’t all that hard. Read more →
Started to venture into procedural modelling for games and created a procedural rock generator in Houdini. Buncha layered noises and stuff. Unfortunately I never got to finish this one as I got sick and needed to start working on another commercial project right after that damn flu finally let go of me. Heapsa fun and wanna digg deeper into this (and have a look at proper uv-ing) when I get the time …
So, I thought I’d be putting H15 through it’s passes a little too look at performance improvements … In my experience, reusing “old” workflows – that have proven to be able to create great results many times over – often yields fun surprises, so I went back to the old POP-Solver (NonDOPs) and had a play.
WOW!!!! I stopped at 4.24BILLION particles taking around 5gb RAM!!! Coulda done a multitude of that on my laptop easily) Nice one SideFX! Read more →

The many changes in the company – including a new partnership – justified a complete overhaul of CI (Logo, letterheads, business cards & webpage). A separate photo-shoot of the team was also part of the gig. Satisfying project with loadsa fun had.
The tax agent office “Steuerberater-Untermain” needed a couple portraits of their team to showcase on their new webpage. A quick trip to the office with a couple builder spotlights was the most convenient and budget friendly option for the client. No studio portraits but decent results for what we had. Great experience and good fun shooting.
Another quick turnaround job for 360 security’s TVC staring Khloe K. Symbolizing a big burden virusses – represented by actors – where meant to be magically pulled off the shoulders of the main male actor and explode into gravel and dust. I was responsible for all those disintegration fx, which included a buncha particles, RBD and fluid sims. Not much time at hand as a one man army, so a quick n easy setup had to be build and implemented into shots. Good fun 😉

Probably the easiest job I have ever had ;). Suzuki Germany was doing a roadshow advertizing their new Suzuki Swift Sport in multiple cities across the country. The promoters there recorded random visitors re-enacting one of several TVC done by Suzuki before for a chance to win a variety of prices. All I had to do is cut these together, add titles and upload them to an online voting portal. A few scripts and off I was working outta the hammok with my bluetooth keyboard and a cold one 😉

for the Ashes series this year KFC flew in the Colonel for a bunch of TVC’s. We filmed at the Sydney Cricket Grounds, which was amazing to see without it being filled with the usual events’ circus. Seeing areas you wouldn’t usually get to see. Also I hadn’t been on set that many times before and that is always exciting.
Later on we added some firework fx with all the volumetric lighting, smoke and stuff in Houdini.

A quick trip down ‘n over to Adelaide … doing a short gig at the awesome studio of Rising Sun Pictures as FX TD to set up HeatHaze and AfterBurner fx tools in Houdini for the Green Lantern Trailer … a couple stops in Adelaide’s ass kicking markets … and back to good old Sydney … a dream?!? yes maybe … sure felt like one … here’s the outcome of some great artists work (I didn’t final any of these shots rather then having build some of the tools for the show – hence the seemingly arrogant “great artists” comment :P) Read more →
During my time on Green Lantern we contemplated creating the backdrops of Death Valley in 3D instead of matt paintings for the dog fight scenes. I suggested NASA DEM’s and Terragen as a fast way and was asked to do a quick proof of concept – including showing volumetrics in TG2. I ended up spending one evening after work on this (as one can tell ;P). We were all pretty happy with it, but rendertimes, the lack of a linux version and our linux based farm meant the end of it in the end. Hope Planetside eventually releases Linux versions of TG. It’s a GREAT package and I would love to be able to use it more at work.

Sam and I did a bunch of shots for what was meant to be a NationalGeographics Docu about the last leg of a bunch of expeditions to complete the 7 summits (reaching the highest point of each continent). This last peak is situated in Antarctica in the Elseworth Mountain range and areal footage is hard to come by or very very expensive. We ended up using NASA data to recreate a physically accurate representation of the area (down to a detail of 1m), chucked some ice and snow on there and created several shots flying a camera through the terrain to show the travel route of the expedition. Unfortunately upon completio NatGeo decided Antarctica expeditions were too cool now and went on producing vulcano docus instead … Still … learned a lot and had a good time.
While on a snowboarding trip in NewZealand I was asked if I had time for a quick shoot in Smirnoff’s “minus5 Ice Lounge”
Sure!! A couple of hours (literally 2h :P) to pay off a few days of fun on Ruapehu’s fun park – always up for that!
Workmate today asked me how easy it would be to get fluids interacting with fur in Houdini as he was having a hard time to get this setup working in Maya … half an hour later … I LOVE Houdini’s procedural approach where things just work

Australian Surf Foundation and Bondi’s Sahnia’s (a host for a few good nights all through summer 08/09) threw a beneficial art exhibition and live music gig to help fight world’s killer number one – malaria.
Also on board: one of my two most favorite Bondi local bands – KINGTIDE.
So when they were asking if I could take some shots of the night I thought “Sure – always up for some voluntary work – especially for a good cause” … and “surfing” is one of ’em :P.
Awesome gig and a great crowd.
Making her way into running her own business as masseuse, Kobie was in need of a Logo, Business cards and so forth. She came to me with an idea for a logo that I then cleaned up, optimized and integrated into a CI. Knowing and appreciating her skills made it easy to come up with something representative. You should give her a call and get yourself a treat. She mostly operates in Bondi, Sydney.

Wow, what a gig!!! No idea how Dewars managed to get us the permit to do this crazy gig in the center of Kuala Lumpur. For about a month we were running a 90min multimedia show twice a day including a 12mx3m interactive video projection achieved with a total of 6 projectors. Being happy with my other design a couple months earlier, Toyota came back for more when they needed another template for their launch of the brand new Land Cruiser 200. Again focus was set on a simple yet efficient design template to present a lot of data rather than the actual car design itsself.
On this one I only helped art direct and design some stage designs that were then manufactured elsewhere. Took only a couple hours but with a great team and actually getting designs made into real stage props rather than just existing in a digital world made it a lot of fun and memorable
For this years Franchize Awards we decided to go with a nature theme, with the panels for the projection areas spinning and leaving water movement behind. Fun gig.
Wow, what a gig!!! 8 workstations, as many monitors (plus one for live tv feeds), 20meters above the stage in an amazing theater – plus the VIP after-party of course. We had (I believe) 64 plasma screens coupled together in the shape of a cassette tape flying on and off stage and content displayed on my cue. Worked with a great team, what more can you ask for. I’ll never forget this gig! Below a couple videos showing what we did:Read more →

Before New Zealand’s national rugby team the mighty All Blacks headed to Paris for the 2007 Rugby World Cup, major sponsor Adidas threw a show including a life gig of OpShop (New Zealand Music Award Winners). Gear for the world cup in France was given away including two custom Adidas-AllBlacks guitars manufactured by Fender.
To promote both the All Blacks and Adidas we produced a video of said event to be shown in Adidas stores across the contry. My job was to take the raw footage, convert it, create a story out of it and cut it all together timed by the life performed song of OpShop. After that (being new to the country myself) I finally knew who they were. Good luck boys!!!

simple keying and color grading job for a show at Auckland’s biggest Audi dealer. Nokia had a stand and we were using Vizoo Holographic techniques to display an existing logo animation.
Speaking of jumping in at the deep end … first gig fresh outta uni … vaguest brief … using Watchout for the first time, BUT I DO love my challenges. Luckily I found out New Zealand’s Prime Minister Helen Clarke was to speak in front of my graphics only when I got to the event at the Auckland Hilton :P.
Toyota NZ summoned all of their national car dealers to their annual awards event and needed a presentation template for that. I ended up designing a New Zealand themed template that would not overwhelm the main focus – the content. Above only represents the empty template for obvious reasons. A job done in a couple hours including all meetings.
As Hannibal says, I like it when a plan comes together …
Another one I worked on during my days at university back in the good ol’ days 😉 ….
Looking forward to start working in Auckland just in time for the snowboarding season to kick off, I decided to spend a couple hours to design and create a board mockup I would get custom made. Thematically the horns of the skull resembles the Auckland Sky Tower. The design recently drew some attention to a German snowboard company and you might see it on the slopes soon ridden by more than just me.

Daniel Völker Photography wanted a web presentation to showcase his work. The brief was to have his work sit in a subtle 3 dimensional space where that didn’t overpower teh main content – his work. Also possibly disabling viewers to download his art without prior consense was a priority. The solution was a flash based template with mouse as well as keboard navigation. A glass frame with a lense reflection was to hover in a darkroom (referencing photography) that would spin to reveal each new art work. To emphasize on the actual artwork said space was to be minimal in color to contrast the colorfull atwork. Press play above for a preview.
